Walk on the Wacky Side – A Guide to Offbeat Los Angeles

Let's be blunt. Los Angeles is a wonderful place for a vacation, and there are plenty of reasons. But truly, have you ever heard of a place that has such a strong reputation for being weird, wacky and quirky? One of the city's nicknames gives fair warning, so beware. When you go to “La La Land” you're liable to encounter more than a few offbeat people, places and things.

People who live in Los Angeles have a saying that accurately describes their fine city. It's a short phrase that almost aways begins and ends with a resigned type of sigh: “only in L.A.” Meaning that whatever is being discussed, it's too weird to be true -- except that in Los Angeles, that “whatever” occurs every day.

Los Angeles is strongly influenced by the film industry, so that's where we'll begin our tour of the weird, wacky oddities that are found throughout this great city.

Hollywood Forever is a unique combination composed of equal parts mortuary and cemetery. Many entertainment celebrities are interred there, and the company takes great pride in providing unusual amenities. For example, its funeral chapel is equipped for live worldwide webcasts of funeral services. But that's not the strangest thing about this place. If you visit Hollywood Forever on a warm summer night, come armed with lawn chairs, food and wine, because you'll be able to catch classic movies while you're there. That's odd enough for a cemetery, but what makes it really wacky? Well, the films are projected onto the wall of Rudolph Valentino's tomb. It's probably intended as a tribute to the cemetery's famous inhabitants, but to non-Angelenos, it's all more than just a bit macabre. Only in L.A.

And speaking of macabre, the Los Angeles Coroner's Office runs a gift shop. It's called Skeletons in the Closet and it specializes in things like beach towels, mugs, and toe tag keychains, many of which carry a logo that's the outline of a body. It even sells a garment bag that's designed to look like a body bag.

What comes next on our tour seems tame after that, but if these tamer places were anywhere else they'd almost be shocking. In Los Angeles they're just part of everyday life.

Venice began as a seaside amusement park, but today, the boardwalk features an odd, eclectic mix of street performers, body-builders and fortune-tellers on display. Not so unusual, until you see what the performers do: one dances barefoot on glass, another juggles chainsaws, while still another balances bikini-clad women on his chin. And the musclemen there have bodies that are beyond compare. This is urban theater at its best, but it's quirky.

Los Angeles is a city of celebrities, and Tess at the California Science Center is one of them. The thing is, this celebrity isn't alive, she's a 50-foot animatronic woman with visible organs. You might see celebrities of the live variety while cruising one of the exclusive shopping areas in Beverly Hills. But you're just as likely to run into costumed celebrity impersonators in several areas of the city, including along Hollywood Boulevard.

The La Brea Tar Pits aren't weird, wacky or quirky, but it's certainly unusual to find such a place in the middle of a big city. Their urban location doesn't slow down the gooey asphalt and smelly methane that bubbles up out of the earth. Every so often this tarry mess includes the fossils of prehistoric animals, many of which are now extinct.

Offbeat is a good word to describe the Museum of Jurassic Technology. But this place also qualifies for weird, wacky and quirky. The museum's exhibits include representations of teleporting bats, horned humans and Cameroon's Stink Ant. But it also includes collections of art relating to trailer park culture and a tribute to Soviet space dogs. It's half-science, half-silly and 100 percent outrageous. Only in L.A.

Watts Towers are a National Historic Landmark. That designation usually means that the buildings are something special. Well, they are, but not in the usual sort of way. This is Los Angeles, after all. There are 17 hand-built towers in this complex, all made of tiles, mosaics, small glass circles and scrap steel, with scrap rebar for reinforcement. These peculiar towers are decorated with things the builder found –- including bits of scrap metal, sea shells and bed frames. The glass circles in the towers have an interesting source: the blue circles are the bottoms of Milk of Magnesia bottles, while the green ones are from various brands of soft drink bottles. Two of the towers are 99 feet high.

This weird and wacky tour could go on and on. Ripley's Believe it or Not Odditorium, turtle racing at Brennan's Irish pub, the Bunny Museum and its quirky cousin the Banana Museum -- they all fit right in.  But only in L.A.

This short article was written to fulfill a request for a 300-350 word article on the most interesting things to see and do in Belgium.

Belgium:  Chic, Medieval and Underrated

Belgium is seriously underrated as a travel destination.  It's compact but it packs a powerful punch.  Somehow, the country blends chic, modern life and architecture that's downright medieval.  The combination is unusual but appealing.

Belgium's most popular tourist destinations are Brussels, Bruges and Antwerp.  Brussels, the nation's capital, blends magnificent architecture, chic cafés and modern skyscrapers into an extraordinary ambience that's remarkably laid back and quirky for a capital city.  For example, the Manneken Pis, a bronze sculpture of a young boy urinating into a fountain, is one of the city's most popular tourist attractions.

The bronze boy of Brussels is just an appetizer, though.  Even if town squares are becoming tiresome, skipping the 12th century Grand Place would be a mistake.  Lined with magnificent guildhalls and buildings hosting sidewalk cafés, cellar restaurants and museums, the Grand Place is also the home of the imposing Hôtel de Ville (City Hall) and several chocolatiers.  Stop in and you'll be able to sample some of the world's finest chocolate while taking in the square's majestic architecture.  While you're there, you could also savor one of the locals' favorite dishes - mussels with French fries.

Walking the streets of Bruges will transport you back in time.  Its remarkably well-preserved cobblestone lanes, medieval buildings and charming canals lend Bruges more than a touch of Old World charm.  Why not take a canal cruise in Belgium's "Venice of the North?"

Antwerp is a dynamic city and the home of the world's foremost diamond cutters.  If you appreciate fine jewelry, you'll enjoy Antwerp the same way people who love chocolate love being amid the chocolatiers of Brussels.  Fashionistas feel the same sort of pull in Antwerp because the city's streets are laden with boutiques operated by renowned fashion houses.  Of course, Antwerp also offers an inspiring cathedral, along with its share of cobblestone streets, chocolate shops and art galleries.

Clearly, Belgium has more going for it than waffles.  It's chic, medieval and underrated.

Following is an excerpt of an article I wrote for an Australian travel company's website.  The original article is longer and this is just a short portion.  Spellings are in "British English" instead of "American English" at the client's request.

Sydney, Australia

Australia's largest city, Sydney is located on the country's southeast coast on an inlet of the Tasman Sea.  The site of Britain's first colony in Australia and still the state capital of New South Wales, many regard Sydney as the unofficial capital of the entire country.  This cosmopolitan city is one of the most multi-cultural in the world, and it offers a bounty of sights to explore.

First stop on many travellers' itineraries is the city's magnificent harbour.  It's the stunning location of the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, two of the modern world's most astounding architectural achievements.  But Sydney Harbour and its environs are by no means the only thing that are appealing:  the Central Business District features grand Victorian bank buildings and intricate shopping arcades, fashionable cafes, an abundance of dining establishments and Sydney Tower, the city's tallest building, from which visitors to the city can experience amazing views of Sydney Harbour.

Sample 4:

This excerpt is taken from one of the website pages I wrote for a prominent London orthodontist.   Again, the original is much longer and this is just a short portion.

Aligner Systems

Aligners are thin, clear plastic appliances that fit very closely over the teeth. Designed to slowly

move the teeth when worn every day, they are similar to the Essix retainer, which is used to maintain (but not move) the position of teeth following orthodontic treatment.

Use of aligners

Aligners move teeth in tiny, incremental steps. A series of aligners is made to perfectly fit onto the teeth, with each aligner in the series being slightly different from the next. All aligners are worn virtually full time for two weeks before moving on to the next set in the series.

  • Aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours every day, and they should only be removed for eating and cleaning. Wearing them less than 22 hours a day will only lead to a poor result.

  • They do not really affect your speech because they fit so closely to your teeth.

  • They are clear and virtually invisible but can be noticed if someone enters your personal space. Few work colleagues will notice that you are wearing aligners.

  • They cost less than Invisalign as fewer aligners are used.

  • Normally only three to four aligners are made at a time. If more movement is required another impression is taken to construct more aligners.
